  • Slang for a 10 ducat gold trade coin issued by German cities and states and Denmark in the 1600s. It was a standard in international trade, especially in Portuguese colonies. The portugu��s of Portugal was the heaviest coin in Europe for most of the 1500s. A portugalozer (there are different spellings) copied it in Hamburg, Lubeck, Dresden, Zwolle, Daventer, and other sites. Lisbon had a favored position in the gold trade. Arab gold pieces were recoined there. 2. The Portugu��s ancestors date to 1340. Under Juan II of Castilla (1406-1454), these ingots shaped coins never intended to serve as a daily circulating currency.
