Drop hammer coin press Publique Deposited

Définition
  • A device conceived but never developed by Leonardo da Vinci. (1452-1519) It has an upper die mounted under a weighted hammer on vertical rails that drops onto a cushioned lower die. Some enthusiastic fans call it the first industrialized tool of the Renaissance, but there is no proof of its use in minting. Speed in coining out-ranked elegance and precision in Europe. Replicas are now demonstrated at U.S. medieval fairs striking small medals - quite fascinating, but slow.
