- Spanish: A die test piece or pattern coin. Experimental coins created to test metals, dies, sizes of planchets and minting processes. 2. A die trial, where dies are 'proved' showing they are ready to be used. These are mounted on a press using a soft metal blank, usually lead or tin, being careful not to damage the die with too heavy a first strike. Lead proofs are usually one sided. A pair of lead proofs called splashers are submitted, approved and archived, one per side.
