  • The 20% of all gold and silver obtained in the Spanish Americas which was to be given to the King of Spain during the colonial period. Metal workers or traders were not allowed to use precious metals that had not been stamped as having the king's fifth removed. Coins could only be made from stamped bullion. Death was the punishment for violating these royal laws.
