Définition

• An independent royal mint built in 1586 in Segovia, Spain. It was founded as a pet project of Felipe II (1556-1598) in 1586 and was separate from the normal government mints of the period in Cuenca, Burgos, Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia, and the old mint at Segovia. The carefully minted roller-die coins were sometimes used by the kings as gifts. Silver merchants in the early 1600s would buy 75-pound silver ingots from the Americas in Sevilla, the metal�s European arrival point. They take that metal to Segovia, and pay the seigniorage for the milled coinage they would buy - including the 76 mm wide 100 reales cincuentines coins from time to time. Italians of the period were particularly found of them. The new Segovia mint employed Germanic coiners who used roller dies to create beautiful coins distinct from the crude hammered pieces of other mints. This historic site in central Spain was rescued from a slow death from bureaucratic incompetence and lethargy by American numismatist Glenn Murray. It is now a museum awaiting significant numismatic elements.
