Définition
  • The excess metal extruded in error from the sides of a coin during minting as the result of high striking pressure. It is more common on proof coins because the press operator is working to fill every crevice of the dies with the planchets metal. Both dies go inside the collar during striking and any excess metal will be squeezed out between the die and the collar. At mints it is called a fin or a burr. American numismatists call it a wire edge. British numismatists call it a knife edge or knife rim.
