• Fernando & Isabel guided a new monetary system into place in 1497 before anyone realized the vast quantities of silver and gold which would come from the still-unexplored Americas. This was an explosion of wealth led to a series of gold and silver coins that would become coveted, respected and copied around the world as Spain squandered much of its new wealth on churches and wars.
