• Ancient Roman coins struck on a planchet with cuts placed on its edge. One theory for the cuts around the edges is that these silver coins were used to pay Northern tribes who did not always trust Roman silver and would cut coins to be sure. The mint-cut edges made the coins look like they had already been well tested.
