• A secretive system to stop photo-editing software from opening a file that contains even a partial image of a banknote. Since about 1996 photocopier makers worked to assure governments that their printers could not be used for counterfeiting or forgery. The printers are forensically traceable, and it is likely that all modern color laser printers invisibly mark documents with the machine's serial number. Even black ink printers and copiers do this. Marks may be text or a repeated pattern of tiny dots imperceptible to the naked eye.
