Definition
  • The Spanish minting process of getting the right number of coins from each marco weight provided. The goal of a Spanish operated mint was always to create a precise number of coins from the weight of silver, a critical part of mint operations. An extra coin or two was no problem at the Spanish mints, but producing a batch of coins that were overweight meant they must all be melted down and the coining done all over again. Any extra coins that were slightly lighter than the authorized weight went into the arca de feble, a chest for those bonus coins for the king.
