  • A gold disc that circulated soon after the conquest of Mexico but before the Mexico City mint opened. The word is Aztec for copper because the pieces were debased with it after they became popular. Tepuzques were outlawed in 1591 but were circulated for a time. 2. Tepuzque referred to low grade gold in general. The word became corrupted through the years in Mexico from tepuzque to tapuzca and finally to chapuza, which means �to cheat� in modern Mexico slang. No examples are known to exist.
