  Graduated from Harvard in 1963. Received masters from American University of Beirut. Served as a foreign service officer 1966-1979. Served on National Security Council staff 1974-1976. Associate Curator at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, California 1982-1986. With White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. President of Arthur Houghton Associates 1995-2005. Served as president of the American Numismatic Society 1994 to 1999. In 2015 he received the Archer M. Huntington Award from the ANS.
