Born in Pawnee City, Nebraska. Received BFA from University of Nebraska in 1941 and MFA from the Cranbrook Academy in 1947. Married to Roberta with a daughter and son.
He taught at the Industrial Designers School for American Craftsman 1947 to 1948; at the University of Oklahoma 1948 to 1949 and the University of Michigan 1949 to 1979. He retired to Prescott, Arizona.
McClure won a national competition to design the San Francisco Cable Car Centennial commemorative medal (Turner 39) struck in 1973.
He died in a nursing home.
