  • Born outside Nashville, Tennessee, and moved to Ohio. Attended Oberlin College. Graduate of the law school at Howard University in 1872. Married Nettie M. Lanston in 1878. Employed with the Internal Revenue Service until 1884. He practiced law in Nashville and was elected to the Nashville City Council for four terms.

    He was one of the founders of the Nashville Penny Savings Bank in 1904. He became president of the National Negro Business League and of the Negro Board of Trade. He was a director of the National Institute for Negro Christian Workers.

    He was active in Republican Party politics and attended four national conventions. Served as Register of the Treasury March 15, 1911, to September 30, 1913. His signature appears on paper money issued during that period. He died at home in Nashville.
