Biografia
  • Born in Hingham, Massachusetts. He was employed in his brother's book store. In 1855 he began work at the Astor Library. He left in 1865 to serve as chief librarian at the Brooklyn mercantile library. He contributed more than 1700 entries to The National Cyclopedia of American Biography. Norton was proprietor and editor of the New York Era 1879 to 1881. He joined the Herald in 1883. He was a playwright and author.

    He served as 3rd ANS President March 11, 1864, to April 25, 1867. During his term the first issue of the American Journal of Numismatics was published.
