Preble, Edward Público Deposited
Born at Falmouth Neck, now Portland, Maine. Entered the Massachusetts State Navy as a midshipman in 1778 and served during the War of Independence. In 1798 he was given command of the Pickering. Married Mary Deering March 17, 1801. In 1803 Preble was given command of the Constitution. It took part in the bombardment of Tripoli. He died in Portland, Maine.
Congress honored Preble with a gold medal by resolution March 3, 1805, for his service in the Tripolian campaign. It was struck in 1814. The medal (Julian NA-3) was by John Reich. Some time in the spring of 1872 Loubat found the original dies for the Preble medals being used as paperweights on the desk of a clerk at the Navy Department. They were returned to the Mint. The mint has produced modern copies (USM 503).
