Biografia
  • Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Graduate of Harvard with B.A. in 1940, a classmate of JFK. Married Ann Gordon Buchanan July 11, 1942. They had four children.

    Enlisted in the Marine Corps. He saw action in the Pacific theater and retired in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Employed with Merrill Lynch beginning as a trainee in 1946. He became a general partner in 1954. From 1955 to 1960 he ran the Philadelphia office. In 1960 he transferred to New York. He became company president in 1968, chairman and CEO in 1971 and served into 1980.

    He was appointed the 66th Secretary of the Treasury by President Reagan and served January 22, 1981, to February 3, 1985. His signature appears on Federal Reserve Notes, series of 1981 and 1981-A. In 1985 the President appointed him as Chief of Staff. He switched jobs with James A. Baker III. After 1987 he was president of Regdon Associates.

    He died in a hospital in Williamsburg, Virgina.

    Regan appears on a mint medal as one of the series for Secretaries of the Treasury. The design of the obverse was by Edgar Steever. Reverse was by John Mercanti. The medal was offered to the public in two sizes, 76 mm (USM 229) and 33 mm (USM 230). This was the first 33 mm medal for a Secretary of the Treasury.
