Rosecrans, William Starke Público Deposited
Born in Kingston Township, Delaware County, Ohio. Graduate of the U. S. Military Academy in 1842 fifth in a class of 56. Married Ann Eliza Hegeman August 24, 1843. They had eight children. He taught at West Point for four years. He resigned his commission April 1, 1854.
Employed as an engineer and architect in Cincinnati, Ohio. He joined General McClellan April 10, 1861, as a voluntary aide-de-camp. Soon he was commissioned brigadier general in the regular army. Rosecrans won the battle of Rich Mountain in July 1861. General McClellan showed the courage and initiative that would characterize his career. He failed to support Rosecrans during the battle. However, he was willing to assume credit for the victory.
Rosecrans was promoted to commanding general of the Department of the Ohio. His forces pushed the Confederate forces out of western Virginia and led to the formation of the state of West Virginia in the captured territory.
In 1862 he was promoted to major general and given command of the Army of the Cumberland. At one time Rosecrans was involved in a battle within the military and he and Grant were both being considered for promotion. The forces of Rosecrans were defeated at Chickamauga and he was relieved of command October 19, 1864. He was replaced by General George Thomas. Grant got command of the western armies. Rosecrans resigned his commission March 28, 1867.
He served as minister to Mexico 1868 and 1869. He was elected to Congress from California 1881 to 1885. As a senator, he proposed that coins be marked on the edges as an aid to identification by the blind. He served on the Assay Commission for 1882. He was appointed Register of the Treasury and served June 5, 1885, to June 19, 1893. His signature appears on paper money issued during that period. He retired to California and died on his ranch near Redondo Beach, California.
