Born in Bolton, England. Married to Ethel Minnie Stothert with three sons and one daughter. Captain of the Mauretania 1915 to 1926. Commadore with Cunard fleet from 1928 until his retirement in 1931.
On April 15, 1912, he was commander of the Carpathia. It rescued 705 survivors after the Titantic struck an iceberg.
Congress honored Rostron with a gold medal by resolution in July 1912 for rescue of survivors of the Titantic. Design was by John Flanigan. Dies were made and struck in gold by Henry Weil at New York. The medal contained over 8 ounces of 24 carat gold. It was presented by the president March 1, 1913.
