Biografia
  • Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of Benjamin Rush.  Graduate of the College of New Jersey, now Princeton, in 1797. Married Catherine Eliza Murray August 29, 1809. They had ten children. Admitted to the bar in 1800.

    Appointed attorney general of Pennsylvania in January 1811. Appointed comptroller of the treasury by President Madison in 1811. Appointed U.S. Attorney General and served February 10, 1814, to November 12, 1817. An unsuccessful candidate for Vice President under Adams in 1828. Appointed Secretary of the Treasury and served March 7, 1825, to March 5, 1829. Sent to England in 1836 to obtain the legacy of James Smithson which resulted in the establishment of the Smithsonian Institution in 1846. He died in Philadelphia.
