Born in New York; brother of Augustus. Studied at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris 1879-80. Married Annette Johnson. They had a son. Louis moved to Cornish to work with his brother. He died in Cornish.
Engraved the dies for the Joseph Francis Lifesaving Medal (Julian LS-13). Julian reported that it took 50 blows to strike this medal and that each blow required 30 minutes for annealing, striking, acid treatment. One medal therefor required twenty-five hours work. He does not report if multiple medals were worked on at the same time.
