Born in Macksburg, Iowa. Married Helen Gertrude Hatton April 24, 1900. Employed in the insurance business.
He was life member number 204 of the ANA. He served as second vice president of the ANA in 1909 and first vice president in 1910. He assumed the responsibilities of editor of The Numismatist December 1, 1942. After two years, 1943 and 1944, he resigned as editor to be replaced by Stuart Mosher. He continued to serve as advertising manager until his death. His 1955 exhibit won the Howland Wood “Best-of-Show” award. In 1957 he received the ANA gold medal as a 50 year member. In 1958 he received the ANA Farran Zerbe Memorial Award. Saxton was a member and officer in the Masons. He served as president of the Iowa Numismatic Association. He received the ANA Medal of Merit in 1950 and CSNS Medal of Merit.
He suffered a heart attack while in Los Angeles attending the ANA convention in August. He died of another attack a month later. His library was left in his will to the ANA. In 1972 he was elected to the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame.
