Born in Port Clinton, Ohio. Received M.S. from Bowling Green State University in 1974. Married Judith Ann Smith in June 1980. Served in the U.S. Army 1969 to 1989 including service in Vietnam 1971 to 1972.
Schwan is a noted authority on paper money. He has served on the board for the International Bank Note Society and as vice president. In 1977 he founded BNR Press specializing in original paper money references. Schwan received the NLG Clemy award in 2005.
He wrote a monthly column for Bank Note Reporter. His articles have been published in the Bank Note Reporter, Bond & Bank Note News, Coin World, Coins, Numismatic News, The Numismatist, the IBNS Journal and World Coin News. Author with Joseph Boling of World War II Military Currency published in 1973 at $19.50. Author of The Paper Money of the E. A. Wright Bank Note Company in 1978 at $3.95. Author with Raymond Toy of World War II Allied Military Currency. Author of Military Payment Certificates in 1984. He received the Glenn Smedley Memorial Award in 2005. In 2017 he was inducted into the SPMC Hall of Fame.
