Sheldon, M. Vernon Publique Deposited
Born in Escanaba, Michigan. Attended University of Michigan, University of Utah, Armour Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago. Married to Marcella Beck in 1946. (She died 12/15/1999) Worked as an electrician in Utah. He was later a supervisor with the Teletype Corporation in Chicago. He opened his own business, the Gagefix Manufacturing Company that operated 1944 to 1953. He was a member of the Masons.
He began collecting in 1924. He served as general secretary of the ANA from 1938 to 1944. He compiled the 50 year index to The Numismatist published in 1940. Hewas elected to the board of governors in 1944, served as first vice president 1947 to 1949, as 27th ANA President from August 24, 1949, to August 28, 1951. He received the ANA Medal of Merit in 1949. He received the first ANA Farran Zerbe Award in 1951. He contributed articles to The Numismatist.
He died in West Palm Beach, Florida. Portions of the Sheldon collection were sold at auction by Bowers and Merena April 8-9, 1983. In 1988 he was inducted into the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame.
