Smedley, Glenn B. Public Deposited
Born in Sangamon County, Illinois. Resident of Chicago. Married to Florence with three daughters. Employed as an electrical engineer with Commonwealth Edison Co. He retired in 1964. Moved to Colorado Springs in 1977.
He served on the ANA board of governors 1953 to 1957 and again 1967 to 1973, as first vice president 1957 to 1959. He was assistant editor of The Numismatist 1959 to 1966. He became editor of The Numismatist with the issue of April 1966. His last issue was February 1967. He received the ANA Medal of Merit in 1953 and Farran Zerbe Memorial Award in 1960. In 1982 he was elected to the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame. He never received a Glenn Smedley Award.
Founder of the Society of Paper Money Collectors. e served as secretary, first vice president and as president of the Chicago Coin Club in 1960. He was named a Numismatic News Numismatic Ambassador in 1974. He served on the board of the Central States Numismatic Society. In 2014 he was inducted into the SPMC Hall of Fame. In 2019 he was inducted into the CCC Hall of Fame.
Smedley collected the works of Victor David Brenner and frequently wrote of his discoveries. He was the author of many articles for The Numismatist including a monthly feature "Numismatic Vignettes" July 1960 to 1985.
He died in Colorado Springs.
