  • Born in Geneva, Illinois. Received dual degrees, B.A. from Wheaton College in 1986 and B.S. from Washington University in 1986. Married to Debra J. Kurtz on June 9, 1990; no children. Employed by Motorola, Inc. from 1987 to 2014.

    He has contributed many articles to numismatic journals and is a frequent speaker. Author of Treasure in the Cellar (2008), the story of the 1934 Baltimore gold hoard. Author, with Joel J. Orosz, of The Secret History of the First U. S. Mint (2011) (NLG Book-of-the-Year 2011). Co-author with Burdette and Orosz of Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Eric Newman (2015). This won the 2016 NLG Award for "Book-of-the-year". Co-author with Orosz and Smith of 1792: Birth of a Nation's Coinage (2017) (NLG Book-of-the-Year 2017). 

    Secretary-Treasurer for the Liberty Seated Collectors Club. Board member for the Numismatic Bibliomania Society 2007-2013. Member of the Rittenhouse Society. Fellow of the American Numismatic Society.  Project Coordinator of the Newman Numismatic Portal at Washington University in St. Louis, 2015 to date.  

    In 2020 he shared the NLG Clemy Award with Joel Orosz. In 2021 he was on the Coin World list of The Most Influential People in Numismatics 1960-2020.
