  • Born in Boston, Massachusetts. Graduate of Harvard in 1830 and Harvard Law School in 1834. Admitted to the bar in 1834. Married to Alice Mason Hooper in 1866. they were divorced in 1873.

    One founder of the Free-Soil party and later helped organize the Republican party. Outspoken opponent of slavery. Elected to U.S. Senate in 1852 and served until his death. Served as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. He died in Washington, D.C.

    Appears on $500 silver certificate of 1880.
