Bio
  • Born near Hempstead, Long Island, New York. He began service on a merchant ship at age 12. During the Revolutionary War he served as a privateer and captured British ships. In 1794 he was appointed captain in the recently formed U. S. Navy and assigned to the Constellation.

    On February 1, 1800 the Constellation fought an engagement with La Vengeance off Guadeloupe. The battle was inconclusive. A month later Congress voted Truxton a gold medal for his service in the battle. He declined command of the Mediterranean squadron in 1802 and was retired from service.

    He was an unsuccessful candidate for the House of Representatives in 1810. He was elected sheriff of Philadelphia in 1816. He died in Philadelphia.

    Truxton is seen on the mint medal (Julian NA-2; USM 502). Dies were by Robert Scot.
