Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Served in U.S. Marine Corps 1962 to 1966. Married Nancy Opitz April 27, 1968. Employed after 1972 as a deputy sheriff.
John and Nancy collect U.S. paper money, Wisconsin tokens and medals, porcelain coins and medals, Civil War tokens and numismatic literature.
John served as president of the Racine Numismatic Society, the South Shore Coin Club and the Milwaukee Numismatic Society. Served on the board of CSNS and as vice president in 1992 and president 1996-98. Elected governor of the ANA and succeeded to Vice President. Elected President of the ANA serving 2001 to 2003
He was the general chairman for the ANA 100th anniversary convention in Chicago. He is a frequent exhibitor and educational speaker. John and Nancy have contributed many articles to numismatic publications including Bank Note Reporter and The Centinel.
