Born in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Married to Vera Forostenko with two children. Received B.A. from Dhaka University in 1960 and M.A. in 1961. Received Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1971.
He was founder of the Grameen Bank, originating the concept of microcredit and microfinance.
He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 and Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. He was honored with a Congressional Gold Medal in 2013. Obverse was designed by Donna Weaver; the reverse was designed by Richard Masters. Obverse and reverse were sculpted by Jim Licaretz. The medal was presented April 17, 2013.
