Born in Rochester, New York. Married to Julia L. with three sons. Employed in the automobile business starting in 1904 and retiring in 1940. He competed as a track bicycle rider and set a New York record for the mile. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the St. Mauritius Commandery, the Knights of St. John and the Elks.
He specialized in Greek and Roman coins. Prior to 1900 he published a price list of copper and colonial coins. His collection was purchased in 1934 by B. Max Mehl. He conducted 30 auction sales between 1940 and 1951. He was life member number 4 of the ANA. He served on the board of governors and as 17th ANA President August 28, 1930, to August 26, 1932. He was Sergeant-at-Arms 1933 to 1937.In 1950 he had the “Best-of-Show” exhibit. He received the gold fifty year membership medal. In 1969 he was elected to the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame.
He conducted 30 auctions in Rochester, New York, in 1940 to 1951.
He appears on a medal struck for the third anniversary of the Rochester Numismatic Association in 1915. He served as president of that club in 1914. The dies were produced by club member J. A. Koeb. There were five pieces struck in silver and 50 struck in bronze.
While preparing an exhibit for his Rochester club, he fell and broke his hip. He died later in a Rochester hospital. Remainders of his collection were sold at auction by Lester Merkin November 20, 1968.
