Bio
  • Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Entered the navy as a midshipman in 1800. Served during the war with Tripoli. Promoted to lieutenant in 1807. In 1814 he commanded the Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain. He was later in charge of the navy yard in Washington, D.C. He died in Washington.

    Congress honored Cassin with a gold medal by resolution October 26, 1814, for his service on Lake Champlain. The 65 mm medal (Julian NA-8) was by Moritz Furst. A modern copy (USM 514) was sold by the mint.
