Bio
  • Born on the island of Jamaica, British West Indies. Educated in Scotland and England. Came to America in 1783. Married Arabella Maria Smith September 4, 1780. They had one son, George Mifflin Dallas, vice president of the U. S. under Polk.

    Admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1785. Counselor in the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 1785. Served as U.S. District Attorney for Eastern Pennsylvania 1801 to 1814.

    Appointed Secretary of the Treasury by President Madison and served October 6, 1814, to October 21, 1816. He secured the bill establishing the 2nd Bank of the United States in 1816. Dallas served as acting Secretary of War March 14, 1815, to October 20, 1816. For a short period of time he returned to the practice of law. He died in Trenton, New Jersey.
