- Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Educated at Monash University in Melbourne and graduated with B.A.(Hons) in 1971; and a Dip.Ed. in 1972. Won a Whitbeck Fellowship in the Geography Department at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, USA where he completed his M.Sc. in 1974. He returned to Australia to take up a secondary teaching position with the Victorian Education Department, teaching Geography and Mathematics.
Malcolm and his wife El Mathias have five “grown” children, and now four grandchildren. El was born in Boston, Massachusetts. USA and became a Teacher of the Deaf in Melbourne. Malcolm and El like to get back to USA to visit family and friends in Boston, Chicago and Madison.
Malcolm enjoyed a long career in education, swapping jobs between secondary, tertiary, school support services and administration as he worked his way up, becoming a High School Principal, State-Wide Examiner, Senior Policy Officer, and Course Quality Manager.
He is the author of a secondary school textbook The Earth in Action (1983), many articles, conference papers, school programs, submissions, newsletters, state-wide examination papers and other written material associated with over forty years in education circles.
Malcolm retired in 2013 and now concentrates on his scale collecting and related research.
He is now the author of a series of works for the Newman Portal, published in 2019, on Maranville counterfeit detection devices manufactured in the 19th century. This research was supported by a grant from the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
