Born in New Ipwich, New Hampshire, father of William Sumner Appleton. Entered Dartmouth College but dropped out shortly to go into business. Married Maria Theresa Gold on April 13, 1806. They had five children. Following her death he married Harriot Coffin and had three more children including William. One of the founders of Merrimac Manufacturing Company in Lowell, Massachusetts.
His daughter Fanny (1817-1861), married Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Nathan died the day following the tragic death of his daughter.
He served on the general court of Massachusetts and in the United States House of Representatives.
