Bio

• Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Graduated for Williams College with masters and doctorate from Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University. Served in U. S. Navy 1966 to 1969. Married to Nancy Landy in 1971 with three children.
  Director of the National Gallery of Art 1992 to 2019.Member of the Commission of Fine Arts after 2003; chairman after 2005.
