Born in Framingham, Massachusetts. Graduate of Harvard University. Married to Nancy with three children. Master at Fessenden, a Newton, Massachusetts boy’s school.
Appointed museum curator at the ANA in November 30, 1973. He was general chairman for the 1973 convention in Boston. He contributed a column to The Numismatist after 2000. ANA governor 2001 to 2005. Summer seminar instructor. Owner of Colony Coin Company.
He was named a Numismatic News Ambassador in 2000. He has received three ANA Presidential Awards in 1994, 1997 and 2009, the Medal of Merit (1998), the Glenn Smedley Memorial Award (2000), the Lifetime Achievement Award (2001) and the Exemplary Service Award (2006). In 2010 he was awarded the ANA Adna G. Wilde Award for Excellence. In 2012 he received the Farran Zerbe Memorial Award. In 2019 he was added to the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame.
