Bio

• Born in Belchertown, Massachusetts. He attended Williams College with James Garfield. Employed as a clerk with the Treasury Department in 1861. Promoted to Cashier by President Grant.

  Appointed Treasurer of the United States serving July 1, 1877, to March 31, 1883. He died at home in Colchester, Connecticut.
