Obverse Description: A portrait bearing the likeness of a Native American in full headdress framed by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. The date is centered at the bottom under the portrait.
Reverse Description: The reverse bears the denomination of ONE CENT in the center surrounded by a wreath bearing a ribbon with arrows tied in at the bottom center.
General Notes: The mintage jumps by nearly a thousand from 1878 to 1879 with 3,200 coins struck. Brown pieces are common along with red-brown; only the finest gems are scarce. Full red gems are scarce also, with the finest ones being very rare. Any grade with a cameo is scarce, at a minimum, with high Mint State grades being rare. Look for attractively toned brown pieces or blazing red surfaces as those are the most desirable and are not too hard to come across.
