Several proposals to coin copper for the US government were made prior to
those made relative to the Fugio contract. In 1782 the London firm of
Bridgen & Waller submitted a proposal via John Adams, then Ambassador to the
Netherlands. In 1785 a proposal was submitted to congress by one T.H.
Walden. I have a copy of Peter Allair's proposal dated 22 Dec 1785 - I'm
not sure right now whether he submitted a second proposal two years later or
his 1785 proposal was included in the consideration of the Fugio contract.
I also have copies of Ogden's proposal (23 Mar 1787) and Jarvis' (Nov.
1786). I have copies of all these proposals in original hand. If there is
any interest, and when I can find the time, I can transcribe them for the
group.
