Heritage was showing a Washington Draped Bust original in choice mint state
which I had them send me on spec.
The coin arrived and it appears to me based on Breen and on on the very
detailed write-up accompanying lot 188 in the Ludwig Smith 1995 auction that
its actually a restrike.
I base my view on the fact that it appears to have a large date - that alone
seems to make it a restrike - plus the toga fold is consistent with the restrike
photos in Breen and doesn't match the Smith coin which was described as an
original.
Before I send this back I thought I'd check in here and see if the date and fold
are the only ways to tell. Note the coin is in a PCGS holder so I can't see the
edge or weigh it.
Thanks,
JA
