Steve, What a neat, exciting coin! While I understand the skepitics, at first blush this looks like a real NJ to me. Of course it needs to be studied in detail in person. But both sides look like new dies, and it looks like a struck coin to me (and you mention it rings). If it shared a die with a known NJ, then the route to verifying it as a new discovery would be more clear. Both sides/new dies will much harder to authenticate. However, great find! I hope that this is the discovery coin that at first sight it seems to have the possibility to be. Every friend of mine should have the once in a lifetime opportunity to come across a "discovery coin".
One question for the group: Mike H. was mentioned. Who else would be a very knowledgeable, trusted person to show such a "find" to? How does a finder move down the path with such a coin. It seems to me that if 2 or 3 of the most trusted people see it in person and offer the opinion that it is indeed real, then the rest of the fraterity will accept that at face value. Is that the path? If so, who are the right people? And then how do you publicize it?
Congratulations on what this might be Steve! Regards, Buell

I recently came across this NJ(see attached) and have not been able to attribute it exactly. I checked the Maris plates, and a few catalogs I have but came up empty. It seems to be similar to the Maris 9 and 10 varieties, but not exactly. I can't match the obverse or the reverse. The coin weighs 139.84 grains and has a good loud ring...I'm no expert, but I can't find any sign of casting. The coin has a 90 degree die rotation. The horse looks kinda odd...funny mouth..like possibly some doubling, but I can't tell for sure...may just be a striking characteristic for this type. I have attached a color and black and white pic...these are the best I have, but should be find for attribution. > > As usual, all comments and opinions are appreciated. > > I have to go to work now, and afterwords have to go out, but I should be back late tonite. > > Thanks again, > Steve > > > > > --------------------------------- > Do you Yahoo!? > Friends.
