    Ray,

To be clear, I understand your context exactly. We do not have to be
"scholarly", we just need to post with a maturity presumably commensurate
    with our years.

    Thanks Neil,

That post just dealt with how we look on this group. But in no way
should that be taken as a request for only scholarly, well researched posts=
    .
There's several hundred on this group (I think) and there must be many many
newcomers or part time colonial collectors. I'd encourage all to post
question here, regardless how basic. If you see something in an auction
catalog about Abel Buel and want to share and/or ask a question, this is th=
    e
place to do it. Someone will have an answer, even if that answer is that w=
    e
don't know at this time. That's one of the fun aspects about colonial coin=
    s
    - that there's a LOT that we don't know and any one of us can come across
the answer either accidentally or through specific research. If this hobby
isn't fun, relaxing and an escape from the outside world, then maybe it's
not the right hobby for you. 99% of the colonial collectors are great
people - fun to be around - happy to help and answer questions - willing to
    share their knowledge.=20=20

As an aside, this past Wednesday there was a Youth Group event at
church. I will probably be a chaperone at some future event so I gave the
teens a few minutes to get to know me. They had 20 questions... when my
coin hobby came up, most of them started laughing a little as if it were a
nerd hobby. I reached in my wallet and passed around a 1/4 cut Spanish 2
Reale coin I found detecting in Suffolk VA. I explained that cutting the
coins was how they made small change and that the last person to touch that
coin before me was wearing a three cornered hat and had buckles on his
shoes! I also showed them a Denarii of Caesar Augustus and explained that
the man whose portrait was on that coin called for a census of the Roman
Empire and it was that census that brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. I
heard "wows" instead of laughter. But this is a fun hobby regardless of ho=
    w
some of the misinformed public perceives it!

    =20

Believe it or not, I must get to work... ON A SATURDAY!!!!

    Ray,

    =20

Excellent post. I am always amazed by how some people denigrate themselves
and their future legacies, however minor, with what they post. I am
involved in a fair number of internet groups and in most of them a
relatively few who do not apparently care about this ruin it for everyone.

    Guys,

I had sent this to an eSIG that I'm a member of. I thought I'd post it
here too. Please read the text on the ebay lot too.

    Hi All,

I saw this on EBAY and already own a couple copies. What I thought
interesting is Charlie Davis' view of the Crosby-Maris relationship. How
accurate are the perceptions we have of the noted collectors of the past?
How we are remembered will probably have a lot to do with what we post on
line. Very few of us will be remembered as the hobby greats, like those
that we "revere" from the 19th and 20th Centuries. Certainly not me. But
once we do something in cyber space, it's there forever for all to see.
When posting on the public groups (and private too), let's think for a
second about what we post and how it's presented, and only then click the
send button. There's always several ways to express an opinion. The hobby
will respect the mature and reasonable posts. Also, we're all of moderate
intelligence and our posts should reflect that too. I still remember how t=
    o
diagram a sentence, thanks to Mrs. Kissel in Grade School. The occasional
humorous post and off topic statements help to lighten up the group, and I
look forward to them - especially Steve Frank's! Well, I could go on but
let me summarize by saying that I'd appreciate an atmosphere where we share
the hobby with consideration for each other.=20=20

hundred on this group (I think) and there must be many many newcomers or pa=
    rt
time colonial collectors.  I'd encourage all to post question here, re=

how basic.  If you see something in an auction catalog about Abel Buel=

want to share and/or ask a question, this is the place to do it.  Some=
    one
will have an answer, even if that answer is that we don't know at this
time.  That's one of the fun aspects about colonial coins - that there=
    's a
LOT that we don't know and any one of us can come across the answer either
accidentally or through specific research.  If this hobby isn't fun,
relaxing and an escape from the outside world, then maybe it's not the righ=

hobby for you.  99% of the colonial collectors are great people - fun =
    to
be around - happy to help and answer questions - willing to share their
    knowledge.  </span></font></p>

three cornered hat and had buckles on his shoes!  I also showed them a
Denarii of Caesar Augustus and explained that the man whose portrait was on
