Shamus - When I look at the colonial group say 25 years ago and I=20 look at the colonial group today I find today of course many more=20 people in this niche than 25 years ago. You of course can back much=20 longer. When I first started (late 70's) I did not see much DEAD=20 WEIGHT. Or putting it in other terms Shamus almost everyone KNEW=20 alot and/or was a HARD CORE copper collector with little or casual=20 collecting. Additionally almost everone was quite territorial in=20 their own State Coinage area - myself in NJ's. There were no casual=20 or so-called weekend type collectors. Even Stacks auctions in the=20 mid to late 80's you would see the same dozen people - all very=20 passionate, well-learned experienced bidders each taking a slice of=20 the pie. Today Shamus the group is more diverse - how many people in=20 this group today REALLY CARE whether fingerprint linking or=20 metallurgy will be the main diagnostic tool 50 years from now ...=20 maybe a dozen of the 350 members. You need to keep this in mind=20 Shamus as I do when I post here ... sometimes the feedback is useful=20 and sometimes annoying. What may also be depressing is that the=20 knowledge behind each series has grown and with current prices it=20 really does not matter how much you know but to a large extent its=20 simply how much you got in your pocket ($$$). Twenty five years ago=20 knowing more than the other ELEVEN guys in the Auction War Room as=20 one collector I know use to call it was a big advantage - today how=20 important is this EXTRA information - minimally - at best in terms=20 of buying the so-called SLEEPER of the sale ... so Shamus - who is=20 going to spend 10 hours a week to build an E-SIG in C4 today? ...=20 really nobody ... there is no purpose anymore since there is so=20 little monetary advantage behind such an endeavor. Other than these=20 C4 specialized books which will be written which pretty much will=20 not be anymore than fine tuning all the existing varieities and=20 their diagnostics ... you can't really expect anymore today in 2006?=20 Soon people will be spending many times more for a plated 1775 C4=20 PLATED Long Neck than a cast George II contemporary counterfeit ...=20 this is the new C4 in the 21st Century Shamus ... just don't take it=20 that seriously ... just keep reading & learning & collecting ... and=20 once in awhile think about the GOOD OLD DAYS where everyone was=20 tuned in - ADVANCED - and there was no STATIC in the background <BG>.
