Tracy,
I took the liberty of tweaking your scans and removing the backgrounds. It does look like it could easily have been excavated-- perhaps it was in sand for a long time, which lets the moisture drain more easily.

I'm only relating the story as it was handed to me by a contemporary
of the event. My grandmother who was there. I have no reason to doubt
what she told me, however, I wasn't there. My father, who was quite
young at the time, held one of the coins until he was in the airforce
in the early 60's. He had an Irish penny. He tells th same story.
I've seen other coins that were found in the vicinity that were in
quite good shape.
That being said, I wasn't there, and the people who were there are
all deceased. So I can't prove anything.
Anyway, I have a couple of better scans that I'm putting in my photo
folder.
You all can judge for yourself.
