The French first used barrettes on the Medaille Commemorative de Madagascar of 1895 which had an elaborate design featuring the name and date. It is also a device applied to a RIBBON BAR of an ORDER -- called a demi-barette -- to indicate class of the order. A ROSETTE is applied to the demi-barette of different color ribbon as follows: Grand Cross or Grand Cordon – rosette on a gold demi-barette. Grand Officer – rosette on half gold, half silver demi-barette. Commander – rosette on silver demi-barette, Officer – ribbon bar with only the rosette. Chevalier – ribbon bar without the rosette.See bar (2).
