That is a Wood 17. Check the bow and ribands(ribbons). They appear as if th=
ey are a little man bending to tie his ski boots.????? The point is that on=
Wood 17(and 18) the little man's back follows the nape of George's neck ex=
actly. There is a narrow (always the same width) channel between the little=
man's back and the back or nape of George's neck.=20
Check a Wood 16 (or the Charlton photo of a Wood 17 which is a Wood 16) at =
the bow and ribbons. The 'little man's' back has 2 huge triangular points i=
n it and doesn't follow the nape of George's neck at all. Also on Wood 16 t=
he 'little man' has a crook in his neck.
With respect to your lack of detail on the lower part of the reverse perhap=
s you have a different die rotation. If you check the scan of the Wood 25 I=
sent against the Baker speciman in the Taylor catalog you will note that t=
he Baker speciman has no detail on the bottom of the obverse and mine has p=
lenty. Mine is a 90 degrees rotation while I think most previously known sp=
ecimans were coin turn. Die rotation does matter.
Or perhaps yours is just weakly struck. I have noticed what appears to be a=
wide varience in striking pressure with many of the commoner blacksmiths. =
Of relatively high grade looking pieces some will appear to be flat with al=
most zero relief while others have plenty of relief but still no details. A=
ny details on the reverse of a Wood 17 are shallowly cut at best and a spec=
imen must be well struck to show them.

Hey Gord,
Well I suppose this image makes my claims look pretty weak, but it's the
best I could get with a scanner. I had to way over lighten to show the
detail I did. There is considerably more detail on the bust and a bit mor=
e
on the nose, as well as on the reverse, especially at the spray and below
that arm. All that "stuff" that looks like dirt, is dirt. I've got some B=
lue
Ribbon on it trying to soften it up.
In "the brass" the coin appears quite choice, and I'm happy with it anywa=
y.
But it is a 17, right?
